Comparison of Hebrew Scriptures and the Old Testament

The Hebrew Bible contains exactly the same 39 books in the Old Testament, but condenses the arrangement of the books to 24, as shown below. In some cases, the total becomes 22, by combining Ruth with Judges and Lamentations with Jeremiah.

Jesus confirmed the extent of the Hebrew Bible when he said “from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah” (Luke 11:51), as these men were the first martyr in Genesis and the last martyr in Chronicles. Jesus told his disciples “that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms concerning me” (Luke 24:44), so confirming the three divisions of the Hebrew Bible.
